LIFTED FROM THE MUD, STRENGTH FOR EVERY STEP

There are moments in life when we feel stuck, like our feet are trapped in thick, slimy mud, unable to move forward. Our stride slows, and even simple steps feel extremely difficult. David wrote in Psalm 40, “He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire.” This is more than poetry; it reflects real life, when burdens, grief, or uncertainty made it difficult for David to take the next step.

Often, we feel stuck and unable to move forward, not because we have failed, but because life has changed in ways we did not expect. Plans shift, relationships change, and the future feels unclear. We may hesitate, overthink, or quietly withdraw. It seems easier to remain where we are than to risk moving forward without clear direction.

Yet the Lord does not leave us there. He does not rush or pressure us. Instead, He meets us in our present struggle and begins to lead us forward, often no more than one small step at a time. These steps may feel insignificant, but they are not. God is not asking that we be perfect, only that we be willing to trust Him with what we cannot control.

Being lifted out is only the beginning. God does more than rescue; He restores. David says the Lord set his feet on a firm place to stand. That firm ground is not just relief; it becomes a place of renewed direction and steady footing. Then comes something deeply personal: “He put a new song in my mouth.” God does not erase our struggles, but He reshapes them. What once felt heavy begins to give way to quiet hope, then to gratitude and praise.

All of this flows from one response, trust. When we place our trust and confidence in Him, He turns our standstill into progress.
