Major Beliefs and Concerns
In the best Presbyterian tradition, we put accent in three places:
- We are strong in biblical authority as a rule of faith (to believe by)
and practice (to live by). We expose people to strong biblical witness in
teaching and preaching.
- We are strongly evangelical. The church stresses the importance of
accepting Jesus Christ as personal savior and following Christ as Lord in
the church and in the world.
- We are very ecumenical and want to be of service to all mainline Christians
and people seeking a meaningful church relationship in our area! People often
say "This is the friendliest church in San Antonio!"

About Cumberland Presbyterians
The three institutions of the
General Assembly
that provide ministry to the church and with the church are:
Bethel College,
McKenzie, Tennessee,
MemphisTheological Seminary,
and the
Cumberland Presbyterian Children's Home
at Denton, Texas. These institutions
all receive monetary support from Our
United Outreach, along with global
missions (we have missionaries on four
continents).
From our roots in the Cumberland
country of Tennessee where
our birthplace
may be visited in Montgomery Bell State
Park, the church came early to Texas,
Sumner Bacon preached in San Antonio as
early as 1830. Cumberland Presbyterians
established many schools including
Trinity University.
By 1900, there were 600
congregations in Texas with more than
30,000 members. The majority of these
congregations along with Trinity University
merged back into the Presbyterian Church
USA in 1906.
A brief history of the Cumberland
Presbyterian Church along with a brief
confessional statement is in the
1984 Confession Of Faith
